WHY A PAP SMEAR TEST IS ESSENTIAL AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR
6 August 2025

In modern gynaecological care, the Pap smear test remains one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer. Although the test itself takes only a few minutes, its role in safeguarding women’s health is profound.
At Plodnost Hospital, our gynaecologists Dr Marija Hristovska and Dr Blagojce Obednikovski – part of our experienced #dreamteam – emphasise that regular prevention saves lives.
What is a Pap smear?
The Pap smear (Papanicolaou test) is a simple, non-invasive screening procedure that analyses cells from the cervix to detect abnormalities, pre-cancerous changes, or the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV).
The procedure is quick and painless, yet powerful enough to detect early signs of serious conditions – often before symptoms appear.
Why is it so important?
There are several reasons why every woman should undergo a Pap smear test at least once a year:
-
Women who regularly do the Pap smear have a 70 percent lower risk of developing cervical cancer.
-
Pre-cancerous changes, when detected early, are 100 percent curable.
-
The test also identifies hidden infections, HPV presence, and abnormal inflammation – even in asymptomatic cases.
When should women be tested?
Specialist gynaecologists recommend:
-
Every sexually active woman should begin Pap smear testing from the age of 21.
-
The test should be repeated once per year, unless more frequent monitoring is advised.
-
Women with a history of abnormal Pap results or HPV infection need closer and regular follow-up.

No symptoms? You still need testing.
One of the most common mistakes is thinking “I feel fine, so I don’t need to go to the doctor.” In reality, most precancerous changes have no symptoms in the early stages.
Regular gynaecological check-ups and annual Pap smear tests are the only reliable method for early detection and prevention of serious conditions.
Our doctors’ recommendation
“An annual gynaecological exam with a Pap smear can prevent major health issues. You don’t need to wait for symptoms – check yourself proactively,” says Dr Marija Hristovska.
At Plodnost Hospital, every woman receives personalised care, no waiting times, and accurate, fast results. We are committed to prevention, trust, and health security.
