Vaccinations In Newborns The First Step To Protection

Vaccinations in newborns the first step to protection

The first days after birth are critical for a baby’s health. At this stage, a newborn’s immune system is not yet strong enough to fight off certain infections. That’s why early vaccinations play a vital role in building the child’s first line of defence. At Plodnost Hospital, neonatal care begins from the first breath. Our paediatric team closely monitors every baby and follows a structured vaccination schedule, offering individualised attention to every family.

What vaccines are given to newborns?
Immediately after birth:
  • BCG vaccine (for tuberculosis)
  • First dose of the hepatitis B vaccine
These two vaccines are typically administered before the baby is discharged from the maternity unit. The BCG vaccine protects against severe forms of tuberculosis, while the hepatitis B vaccine prevents long-term infection that could lead to liver damage later in life.

At 2 months of age:
  • A combined vaccine protecting against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), polio, Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib), and hepatitis B
  • Pneumococcal vaccine
  • Rotavirus vaccine
These immunisations are part of the national immunisation programme and follow a specific timeline to ensure the child receives timely and effective protection.
