Cardiology

Cardiology is a specialised medical field that focuses on diseases of the cardiovascular system. The primary aim is to deliver expert prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment for patients with heart and vascular conditions. Cardiologists study the pathophysiology and causes of cardiovascular diseases, conduct diagnostic tests, treat and prevent both congenital and acquired heart conditions, prepare patients for heart surgery, and manage cardiovascular complications from heart-related or other diseases.

Common heart conditions managed by cardiology include: high blood pressure (hypertension), atherosclerosis, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, heart failure, congenital heart defects, cardiomyopathy, pulmonary embolism, pericarditis, myocarditis, arrhythmias, and atrial fibrillation.

The most frequent symptoms linked to cardiovascular disease are:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Irregular heart rhythm
  • High blood pressure

A consultation with a cardiologist may be recommended even without visible symptoms, especially if there is a family history of cardiovascular disease or risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, or the start of a new fitness regime.

During pregnancy, women may develop heart conditions such as high blood pressure, ventricular extrasystole, or even cardiomyopathy. These cases require careful monitoring during both the prenatal and postnatal periods. Women with these conditions also face an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases later in life, particularly after menopause.

Before undergoing any non-cardiac surgery, a cardiologist will perform an electrocardiogram (ECG) and assess the patient’s overall cardiovascular health and the potential risks of the operation. The cardiologist will provide guidance for managing the patient during and after the surgery and anaesthesia. Post-COVID syndrome has also been frequently linked to cardiovascular issues, requiring cardiological consultation, monitoring, and treatment.

What does a cardiologist examination involve?

During the consultation, the cardiologist will discuss the patient’s symptoms, medical history, risk factors, and family background. A physical examination, blood pressure and pulse measurement, and electrocardiography will be performed. If necessary, further tests like blood imaging or vessel studies will be conducted. In some cases, long-term heart activity and blood pressure monitoring may be required. A personalised treatment plan is then developed, and advice on managing cardiovascular disease and lifestyle changes is provided.

If necessary, patients may be referred for interventional cardiology procedures such as cardiac catheterisation, angioplasty, stenting, or correction of congenital heart defects. When rhythm disorders are detected, electrophysiological studies or pacemaker placement may be recommended.

At Hospital Plodnost, patients can access consultations with highly qualified cardiologists, undergo ECGs, echocardiograms, and more. If necessary, Holter ECG and blood pressure monitoring can be conducted at home using our state-of-the-art equipment. Based on the findings, a tailored diagnostic and treatment plan will be developed. For more information or to schedule a consultation, contact Hospital Plodnost or speak with your doctor.
