First and Only Hospital in Macedonia with 3D Advanced Laparoscopy and Sentinel Lymph Node Detection Using ICG Mapping

In 2021, Hospital Plodnost introduced the most advanced 3D laparoscopic sentinel technique with ICG (indocyanine green) mapping for the detection of lymph nodes in patients with endometrial (uterine) cancer.
Using state-of-the-art electrosurgery and modern visualisation systems, we are able to provide faster and safer surgical outcomes through small incisions, reduced need for strong analgesia and significantly lower operative and post-operative risks with a minimally invasive approach.
The ICG methodology we use allows us to precisely identify and map the first lymph nodes through which a tumour may begin to spread. At all stages of the disease, there is an estimated 15 percent risk of metastasis to the lymph nodes, which is why lymphatic status is key to proper treatment planning and prognosis.
With the implementation of this method, patients in Macedonia and the region now have access to treatment standards previously available only in leading global centres for oncogynaecology.
What is sentinel lymph node biopsy with ICG?
Sentinel lymph nodes are the first nodes where cancer cells are likely to spread. With the injection of ICG dye and advanced laparoscopic visualisation, these nodes become visible in real-time during surgery. This allows for their selective and safe removal without the need for extensive lymphadenectomy.
By avoiding full lymph node removal, we reduce the risk of complications such as lymphoedema or nerve damage while still obtaining accurate diagnostic and staging information.
Benefits of 3D laparoscopy with sentinel biopsy:
- Enhanced visual depth and precision
- Reduced operative time
- Smaller incisions and minimal invasiveness
- Lower need for strong pain relief
- Faster recovery
- Improved oncological control with tissue preservation
By introducing this technique, Hospital Plodnost became the first centre in Macedonia to offer oncogynaecological surgery at the level of Europe’s top institutions. This is a step forward in our mission to bring the most advanced surgical care to our patients with accuracy, safety and compassion.
