A Hybrid Approach to Rooming-In at Plodnost Hospital: Balancing Bonding, Rest, and Care
26 May 2025

The first hours and days after birth are critical for establishing the bond between mother and newborn. At Plodnost Hospital, we apply a hybrid rooming-in model, carefully designed to support natural bonding while also allowing mothers the rest and medical support they may need during postpartum recovery.
What is hybrid rooming-in?
Rooming-in typically refers to a practice where newborns stay in the same room as the mother after birth, instead of being placed in a separate neonatal unit. At Plodnost, we have introduced a hybrid variation, which includes:
Initial observation of the newborn in the neonatal unit, followed by return to the mother’s room
Mothers can decide when they prefer to rest and have the baby temporarily cared for by our staff
During these times, the baby is in the care of our neonatal team, under full medical supervision
A dedicated 24/7 team of nurses, midwives, and neonatologists is always available for support
Benefits of the hybrid rooming-in model
Supports breastfeeding – Close proximity encourages natural breastfeeding and strengthens the maternal instinct
Enhances emotional bonding – Skin-to-skin contact promotes emotional adjustment and reduces stress
Provides safe rest – Mothers can rest assured knowing their baby is in safe hands
Flexible and respectful – Every mother receives the individual attention and support she needs

This model is especially helpful for mothers recovering from caesarean sections, those experiencing emotional challenges, or anyone who simply needs a moment to regain energy.
Aligned with global healthcare standards
Hybrid rooming-in is a practice in line with recommendations from both the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, which highlight the benefits of keeping mothers and babies close together. However, true patient-centred care means allowing flexibility based on each individual case. At Plodnost, we do not follow a one-size-fits-all policy — we tailor our approach to suit the physical and emotional needs of each mother and newborn.
As a leading private maternity hospital in North Macedonia, we are committed to combining medical excellence with warmth, safety, and compassionate support — ensuring both mother and baby receive the best possible care.
