Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy is a frequently performed procedure that allows direct visualization of the interior of the gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach and duodenum). It is performed using a gastroscope, which is a flexible, bendable instrument. Gastroscopy is the initial procedure for confirming reflux esophagitis (reflux disease), confirming gastric and duodenal ulcers, but also for detecting gastric and esophageal cancer.

Gastroscopy is the best method for detecting abnormalities in the upper part of the gastro-intestinal system.

You should have a gastroscopy if you have any of the following symptoms:

  1. Difficulty swallowing
  2. Nausea
  3. Vomiting
  4. Bloating
  5. Abdominal pain
  6. Pain and burning sensation in the sternum
  7. Heartburn
  8. Helicobacter pylori infection

If these symptoms last for a long time, you should consult a gastroenterohepatologist for a further decision on gastroscopy in order to rule out more serious diseases, and then proceed to therapy.

By taking therapy prematurely, many diagnoses such as stomach cancer can be hidden, so that it is too late for an appointment.

Gastroscopy

If you have black stools or “melaena”, vomiting blood or “haematemesis”, this is an indication for urgent gastroscopy.

Gastroscopy is the gold standard for detecting abnormalities in the upper gastrointestinal system and there is no better method to replace it.
