Cervical cancer develops gradually, typically starting with specific precancerous lesions (known as precancers) on the surface of the cervix. It is widely accepted that the primary cause of these changes is infection of the cervical cells with a group of viruses known as human papillomaviruses (HPV).
Papillomaviruses are a diverse group of viruses comprising numerous subtypes. Some HPV types cause only benign changes (e.g., genital warts), while others have oncogenic potential, meaning they can lead to precancerous changes that may eventually develop into cervical cancer. Based on these findings, an effective vaccine was developed to protect against infection with specific high-risk HPV subtypes.
When should the HPV vaccine be administered?
