Uterine Curettage

Uterine curettage (abrasion) is a minor gynaecological procedure performed under short-term general intravenous anaesthesia in a specially equipped operating room by a specialist gynaecologist, with the presence of an anaesthesiologist. This procedure is used when a conservative approach is not sufficient to establish a diagnosis. Due to its minimally invasive nature and the possibility of adequate pain management, the procedure is associated with minimal discomfort and does not significantly disrupt the patient’s daily activities. The stay in the medical facility lasts only a few hours.

After thorough disinfection, the depth of the uterine cavity (hysterometry) is assessed, and the cervical canal is dilated. This is followed by the revision of the uterine cavity contents using a specialised instrument (curette). If necessary, the cervical mucosa is also curetted beforehand (separated trial abrasion). The obtained material is sent for histological examination.

Indications for uterine curettage:
 

• Irregular uterine bleeding;
• Thickened uterine lining (hyperplasia);
• Removal of benign formations (polyps, etc.);
• Cleaning of the uterine cavity after spontaneous or induced abortion, molar pregnancy, etc.
