A biopsy is a highly specialised diagnostic method used to obtain a tissue sample from an abnormal or suspicious area of the cervix. This procedure is performed using a special instrument (biopsy forceps) under constant visual supervision through a colposcope. A biopsy is an essential step in diagnosing various conditions, including precancerous changes, infections, or other cellular abnormalities.

The procedure is carried out on a gynaecological chair by a specialist obstetrician-gynaecologist and does not require special preparation from the patient. During the procedure, a slight pinching sensation may be felt, but in most cases, anaesthesia is not required. Once the sample is collected, it is sent to a specialised laboratory for histological analysis, where a pathologist examines it under a microscope to detect any potential abnormalities.

When is a biopsy recommended?

Abnormal results from a Pap smear;
Presence of atypical cells detected through colposcopy;
Persistent vaginal bleeding with no known cause;
Chronic infections or inflammation of the cervix;
Suspicion of precancerous or cancerous changes.
