The PAP smear is a cytological examination of a sample taken from the outer surface of the cervix and the cervical canal during a routine gynaecological examination. The sample is fixed and sent to a specialised laboratory for evaluation by a certified pathologist. Using staining techniques and microscopic examination, the pathologist determines the type and extent of cellular changes on the surface of the cervix and the beginning of the cervical canal.
This examination does not require any special preparation. It is usually performed in the first few days after the end of a regular menstrual cycle. Results are typically available within a few working days and are personally received by the patient after consultation with a doctor.
Regular PAP smear screenings are crucial for the prevention of precancerous and cancerous cervical conditions. The test helps identify women at higher risk for certain cellular abnormalities, allowing for further in-depth clinical assessments such as colposcopy and targeted biopsy.
At Hospital Plodnost, the PAP smear is performed in a comfortable environment with state-of-the-art equipment by highly qualified specialists. For more information on how and when to get a PAP smear, please contact your doctor or call +389 (0)47208880
